Robert "Snake" Mickey

With 35 years of training in the martial arts, Robert "Snake" Mickey brings a lifetime of experience to the teaching staff at Ancient City Martial Arts. Snake began his formal studies in Colorado with a broad-based approach that was rare at the time, training simultaneously in Isshin-ryu karate (black belt); judo (brown belt); and Japanese jiu jitsu. He was a "mixed martial artist" years before the term was coined.

Moving to Los Angeles, California gave him the chance to further develop his skills at the Jet Center, the school of kickboxing legend Benny "the Jet" Urquidez. Five years there afforded Snake the opportunity of training extensively in Muay Thai & international-style kickboxing with 7-time world champ Peter "Sugarfoot" Cunningham, as well as co-authoring Cunningham's instructional book, "Civilized Warring."

Transitioning into the fitness realm, Snake was one of a handful of original instructors for the L.A. Boxing gym franchise in Orange County, California, which gave him the chance to work alongside numerous up-and-coming UFC fighters. A move to Connecticut to start a multi-level kickboxing program at Yale University came next, as well as a similar program at nearby Quinnipiac University.

Following his move to St. Augustine, Snake searched the area for a martial arts school with a philosophy similar to his own. "I found it at Ancient City Martial Arts. Michael Plott and I are very much in agreement on what works and what doesn't. We think a lot alike, and our goal is simple: to have the best Muay Thai program around."
